To me theres 3 major facters.first what kind of vehicle is it? Every vehicle is diferent in size, shape, and flexableness witch will efect sub performance( Larger space needs larger speaker displacement,Small space lesser displacement)2nd. What sound are you looking for? Are you a base head or an audofile.Do you want to piss off your naughbours or whant to enjoy a movie expereance like non other.Your sub will effect the type of music you listen to(a hard rocker wont get much out of a 15 and greater and if heavy bass and throbing throut pain is what your looking for a 10'' or lower just wont cut it.Now the last and What i think is the most important is how much are YOU willing to spend? In this industry you get you you pay for and anything you buy will only sound as good as it was worth.
if: important fact- if cash flow is a problem any sub will sound good in the write box.

One thing i would just like to throw out there with what buff matt says altho I completely agree with what he says it also strongly depends on how much airspace you are able to give you box. and then what kind of enclosure your going to use, eg: mdf, fiberglass or what ever it may be your gonna use. anyway, theres my 2 cents, peace.
